Alexander Rose Furniture Care and Material Information

Garden Furniture Care

Alexander Rose manufactures garden furniture which will last for many years. Over time, as part of the natural weathering process, cracks and splits will appear in the wood particularly on the end grain and to a lesser extent on the surface. The drier the wood, the more cracks will appear due to natural oils and minerals in the wood which evaporate due to exposure to the elements. As with most hardwoods, this is normal behaviour for any timber which remains outdoors.

Our timber furniture is designed with this in mind and its strength and durability will remain unaffected. Wooden furniture can be treated with our specially formulated care products to give a beautiful rich fi nish and enhance the look of the wood. Alternatively it can be left to turn a silver grey, and should be cleaned occasionally with soapy water.

Garden Furniture Material Information

Teak is the perfect hardwood when it comes to outdoor furniture. It is yellowish brown in colour and has a beautifully smooth texture and a striped grain. Its naturally high oil content gives it a formidable resistance to extreme weather conditions making it the most durable timber with a life span of 25 years plus. Alexander Rose FSC Avant Teak comes from premium grade timber in Brazil.

Mahogany is a hardwood with ideal qualities for producing excellent garden furniture with a durability of twelve years plus. The heartwood is pinkish when freshly cut and darkens to the typical mahogany reddish brown. Alexander Rose FSC Mahogany timber comes from The Congo in Central Africa.

Roble is a hardwood which is light yellow in colour, it has a smooth luster and texture with a closely interlocked grain. Roble has excellent machining and turning qualities, glues, finishes, and polishes well. Its strength is similar to teak. If left untreated Roble will mellow down to a silver grey appearance, our FSC Roble timber comes from Bolivia.

Karri is a dense close grained hardwood with durability of ten years plus. It is pink to reddish brown colour and each piece of furniture has an oiled finish giving it a smooth lustre. Alexander Rose FSC Karri timber comes from eucalyptus trees in South Africa.

New England Benches are made from Karri timber a species of Eucalyptus, the timber is FSC sourced from Uruguay. The white finish is the result of two coats of polyurethane paint, it has a glossy sheen and will brighten up any garden or space.

Viro Weave is a synthetic, highly flexible, tensile-strength polyethylene fibre used on our Woven Collections of furniture. Viro fibres are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE), a 100% recyclable, nontoxic material. It is perfect for outdoor use and has unique properties that render it insensitive to UV rays and extreme weather conditions.

Aluminium is used for the frames in the San Marino, Ocean and Manila Ranges. Using aluminium extruded tubes achieves a high strength-to-weight ratio, with the result being a very strong and light weight frame. Aluminium has corrosion-resistant properties which makes it ideal for outdoor use, it has a thin transparent oxide film giving it self-protection. The frames are also powder coated which provides an attractive finish.

Glass is a material produced from a combination of quartz sand - silica, soda and lime. As well as being 100% recyclable, it will not deteriorate, corrode or stain. The Glass we use is tempered safety glass complying to BS EN 12150.

Stainless Steel is used primarily on our Avant Collection which consists of 45 pieces of sophisticated engineered furniture. Stainless steel contains chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide which prevents surface corrosion and overts it spreading into the metal’s internal structure. We use grade 304 tubular sections which are chemically pickled and naturally passivated after fabrication to improve it’s resistance to tarnishing.

Textilene is a tough synthetic fabric made of PVC coated polyester. It has specially formulated yarns developed to withstand UV fading, mildew and the most severe weather conditions. We offer an excellent choice of five colours to choose from; black; white; taupe; metallic silver and copper.

High Pressure Laminates (HPL) a reproduced by combining thermosetting resins reinforced with wood fibres under high pressures and temperatures. The result is an extremely tough and weather resistant material comparable to hardwood but not susceptible to weathering, mould or rot. Smooth to touch compact laminates have a pore free surface structure, ensuring that practically no dirt can accumulate and is completely unaffected by household cleaning agents or strong organic solvents. HPL is available in Grey, Taupe, and White.
